3 Hair Color Trends We Can't Resist

It's the final stretch of summer, and while most of us are happily ensconced in our plans for those last sunny days, our hair is most likely bleached out, frizzed out, and a far cry from the color we started with in May. It's time for a fresh-start and a first look at fall hair color trends for 2010, just the antidote for forlorn, summer-soaked tresses. When contemplating an autumn shade update, take into consideration your skin-tone and, of course, the cool season ahead—shades just want to go darker, richer, and warmer in fall. But there are also some new trends and techniques afoot that you might not be expecting, making fall hair-color a bit of an art-form. So take aim, choose your color, and pull the trigger!

1. Go 3-D
Privé colorist Michael Donehoo says goodbye to the monotone hair-color trend and welcomes multi-dimensional shades for fall 2010. “We’ll see highlights and lowlights, but in a much more natural way, with lighter ends or around the face for that sun-kissed hint of color.”

Donehoo prefers using the Balayage technique, where highlights are painted onto your hair instead of using foils. “Another option is to backcomb sections of hair and place the highlights over these sections. This will give the effect of more highlights at the ends than the roots.”

Kim Vo, of L.A.’s Kim Vo Salon, likes his own term for fall highlights, a mix of brown and blonde called, Bronde. “Bronde is easily achieved by painting a few select top layer pieces of hair using two different volume lifting crèmes, giving dimension and depth.” Vo pairs the look with a tousled style, saying, “This trend is so wearable, it’s a little bit grunge-goddess-meets-glamour-girl.”

2. No More Drama
For Clayton, a colorist at New York’s Bumble and bumble, fall 2010 hair-color is about understated, natural shades and highlights: “Richer tones, rather than the bright, high-contrast colors of summer, work nicely as your tan fades away,” she says. “I’m always thinking about how hair-color will correspond with makeup, and I really liked the trend toward nude faces with a brown or bronze-ringed eye. For fall, make the hair around the face a bit lighter or the ends a bit darker—an overall soft look but with an accent in one place and in the same color palette.”

For thrill-seekers, Claytons recommends a soft, pastel-toned double process for fall: “I was teaching a color class and one of the models had pink tones in her hair from a previous process. After bleaching, those tones remained and softened the overall look, making it just right for a dramatic fall choice.”

3.Red Riot
According to Tracey Cunningham, Redken Creative Consultant for Color, red is still rad for fall. “Redheads this fall and winter will have no highlights, just vibrant, deep mahogany tones,” she says. “Redken’s new Color Fusion Rubilane Collection of hair color for Redken salons creates the perfect sophisticated and modern copper-red shades.”
