The ShopSueyBoutique

The ShopSueyBoutique.com online store was started in 1999 by self proclaimed “shop-a-holic” and owner Heather Gray. Shopping for her friends soon became a neighborhood sensation. When strangers started showing up on Heather’s doorstep as if her home was a retail shop, she decided to start a website so that her new-found following could shop from home! What started as a way for this stay at home mom to earn extra money way back when her two daughters were babies, has blossomed in to a world famous internet shopping site. Being featured constantly in fashion magazines as the go-to site for “looks for less” and “celebrity inspired fashion” has established the Shop Suey name and created our very recognizable brand.

Like practically everything else in life, my beef with dressing rooms has an appropriate Seinfeld reference--remember when Elaine blamed Barneys for convincing her, with its ambient lighting and "skinny mirrors," that a dress made her look like a million bucks, only to traipse around the city in search of other, less-biased mirrors for a more honest opinion? I feel her pain.
The Budget Fashionista recently discovered that Forever 21 (and a slew of other stores) use some pretty shady tricks to make you look as fabulous as possible inside their stores, tempting you to make purchases you might otherwise skip if your mind weren't entranced by your own gorgeous reflection, a la Narcissus. So just how is it done? The Budget Fashionista says, "Through the clever use of tilted mirrors, which tilt towards you at the bottom and gradually tilt away from you at the top. This trick makes you appear 'smaller' by gradually moving the largest part of your body (your torso) away from the smallest part of your body (your feet) . Think of it as a reconfigured Funhouse mirror, distorting your body to make you look thinner (and buy more) rather than to make you laugh."

And the tomfoolery doesn't end there, dolls: "They also use soft, amber lighting (aka 'Oprah Light'), that makes even the most aesthetically challenged of us look hot (like how EVERYONE in Oprah’s audience looks like they just had a facial). This light makes your skin look better by evening out your skin tone. "
It wouldn't be so bad, she goes on to say, if Forever 21 didn't have such an unforgiving return policy--once you think you look gorge in that dress, you're stuck with it (or its equivalent in store credit).
I'm sorry, but...what the heck?! Don't we women have enough body image issues to deal with in a dressing room without worrying if those extra squats are actually paying off, or whether it's just a store's sneaky way to try and get us to part with our hard-earned money? It's not always convenient to bring an honest second opinion along, and there's no more devastating feeling than getting your brand new, fabulously svelte-ifying dress home only to discover that you blew $50 on something that most definitely doesn't make you look like you've been living on veggies and tofu (not to mention the torture your poor boyfriend/husband/significant other must endure when the inevitable questions of "does this make my butt look big?" come out).
Yes, we all want to look gorgeous. Yes, we sometimes engage in some silly acts to trick ourselves into feeling so. But those should be our choices--not some chain store that's just looking to make a quick buck off of women's insecurities. What do you think, gals? Are you as riled up about dressing rooms as I am? Do you ever fall in love with something in the store, only to get it home and discover it's less than flattering? How do you deal with it? Discuss!
Oh, and...remember the dressing room that actually tells you if your butt looks big? Check it out!

A Chic & Easy Trick For Breaking Out Of Your Cocktail Frock Rut
Don't get us wrong, we love our favorite Little Black Dress. But after wearing it to about, oh, 16 bachelorette parties and post-work cocktail fetes in a row, we occasionally get the urge for something totally new. And that's where this very handy little styling trick comes in...
Check out Anna Kendrick on the red carpet at the premiere of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World earlier this week, wearing an adorable cocktail dress by Marchesa, with a totally unexpected accessory--bright yellow Jimmy Choo shoes! She could have worn practically any other shade with this dress--nude, a metallic like silver or gold, even black--but her choice of footwear turned this outfit from just kinda cute into a total knockout. And if you go bold with an unexpected color combination of your own at your next big party, I doubt anyone will be able to resist telling you how chic you are. Here are a few we really dig.
Take a cue from Anna and go sexy in a sleek blue and black strapless dress ($48 at macys.com)...and totally hot with your heels:

Afraid a pink dress is too juvenile? Make it instantly sophisticated with bold blue stems (Chiffon dress, $13.99 at forever21.com):
Bold enough to try out a yellow dress ($32.50 at ardenb.com)? Then why not really go for it and make a statement with your footwear? Hot pink high heels will have everyone wishing they had half your confidence:
What do you think, dolls? Are you ready to spice up your fancy-dress routine? Do you think bright, mismatched shoes would help you break out of your LBD rut? Which of these color combos is your favorite? Discuss!

"I picked up this Zac Posen for Target Skirt (Dress) on clearance and immediately asked myself - ok what am I going to wear this with?" Megan, the genius behind The Frugalista Diaries, writes to us. "Denim! I had this pleated Miley/Max Tunic (gifted to me) hanging in my closet just dying to be worn. I threw on some black high waisted shorts under the skirt and tucked the tunic in and was off."
Here's a brilliant example of taking something that feels super dressy and probably prom-appropriate, like a tulle skirt, and making it work for daytime by pairing it with an uber-casual basic, like a chambray shirt. Adorable, huh? Shop our version of the look for less now:

Skin Care Wisdom You're Better Off Without Ditch these common myths and get a healthier glow
Here, experts separate fact from fiction and reveal the best ways to keep years off your face.
By Genevieve James
Myth 1: Skin Should Feel Tight After Washing
Truth: If your skin doesn't feel fresh and supple, you're probably washing with a cleanser that's too harsh. Daily cleansing banishes blemish-causing bacteria and removes radiance robbers such as makeup, oil, and dead cells. However, harsh detergents and overwashing can increase the appearance of fine lines and can often trigger breakouts, too, as oil production kicks into overdrive to compensate for a lack of moisture.
Switch to a creamy cleanser with hydrators such as glycerin as well as mild surfactants like sodium or disodium cocoyl glutamate or cocamidopropyl PG-dimonium chloride phosphate (CPG), which are derived from coconut oil. "They all wash away makeup but restore moisture too," says Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, MD, a clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of Miami. Try Avalon Organics Lavender Renewal Facial Cleansing Gel ($12; drugstores) and Origins Never A Dull Moment Skin-Brightening Cleanser ($18.50; origins.com).
Myth 2: Drugstore Products Aren't As Good
Truth: "Regardless of where they're sold, most anti-aging lines contain the same ingredients," says David Bank, MD, a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, NY. These include scientifically proven anti-agers such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, peptides, and antioxidants (like vitamin C and green tea). To get the most bang for your buck, look for packaging designed to maintain a product's freshness and potency. For example, an airless pump keeps oxygen (and your fingers!) out of a cream, while an opaque coating around a bottle blocks sunlight. Another tip to boost effectiveness: Check the ingredient label to be sure the rejuvenators you want are listed high up—ideally, within the top 10.
Myth 3: Anti-Agers Make Skin Look Worse
Truth: Topical creams won't leave skin as red and blotchy as either of the big anti-aging guns--lasers or chemical peels. But key rejuvenators like retinoids, which speed cell turnover and stimulate collagen production, can be so irritating you may just want to give up. Don't! These simple tricks will keep you from hoisting the white flag: First-timers should prep skin for 2 weeks with an antioxidant like green tea. Try June Jacobs Advanced Cell Repair Serum ($78; junejacobs.com).
And consider a milder OTC retinol instead of a stronger Rx version. Try Vichy Liftactiv Retinol HA Night ($42; drugstores). Mix a pea-size amount of retinol with your face cream to help offset dryness, and apply it every second or third night. Skin still too dry? Build up tolerance for a few weeks by putting the cream on for 5 minutes every other night and then rinsing it off. As skin becomes acclimated, work up to full nightly applications.
Myth 4: After Age 40, aging is Pointless
Truth: By now, your skin has seen only about half its lifetime sun exposure. So don't put away the SPF--there's still plenty of time to ward off sun-induced aging. Bonus: Protecting your skin on a daily basis allows it to repair itself from past assaults. Surprisingly, most of the damage isn't from baking on the beach--it's the result of cumulative, incidental UV exposure from, say, a quick drive to the supermarket or a midday walk. Besides damaging skin directly, "UV rays trigger free radicals, destructive molecules that act like little darts, poking holes in skin's support structure that lead to lines and sagging," says Gross.
The protection in a daily lotion with built-in aging might not be enough, though. Even when the SPF is 30 or above, these formulas often lack adequate coverage against UVA rays, the main culprit behind skin aging. To fully safeguard your skin, wear a separate aging over your face cream or choose a moisturizer with avobenzone, Mexoryl, or zinc oxide, the best UVA blockers.
Two agings that contain potent UVA protection and antioxidants: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock Fluid SPF 55 ($12; drugstores) and La Roche-Posay Anthelios 45 Ultra Light aging Fluid ($34; CVS).
Myth 5: If A Product Doesn't Work Quickly, You Should Move On
Truth: It's crucial to stick to a regimen long enough to see what works for your skin and what doesn't. "I suggest waiting 8 to 10 weeks before you abandon a product and try the next thing," says Mark G. Rubin, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego, and author of Your Skin, Younger. And keep in mind that not everyone's skin will respond the same way to an anti-ager. "Most active ingredients do work on everyone—just to varying degrees," he says.

Simply taking your running routine out of the gym ups calorie burn by about 5 percent, thanks to wind and varied terrain. And fluctuating outdoor temps further increase the number of calories you torch by about 7 percent because your body has to work to keep your thermostat dialed in to 98.6 degrees. Not convinced? In 2007, researchers in England found that outdoor workouts are nature's Zoloft. When they compared the mental benefits of a 30-minute walk in the park with an indoor jaunt, 71 percent of the subjects who took it outside said they felt less tense afterward, while 72 percent of the indoor crew felt even more stressed.
A harder body and a brighter outlook? That's enough to make us ditch the fluorescents for the sun. So we asked fitness pros to craft some killer open-air workouts. The resulting 30-minute sweat sessions will get your blood pumping at any track, pool, park, or trail. Go on--get out there!
