Ridiculous Study Claims Plus Size Models Equal Obese Society

A new study from The London School of Economics and Political Science claims that plus-size models will increase obesity in the United States and Europe. Authors, Dr. Davide Dagone and Dr. Laura Savorelli, write that, “Given that people are on average overweight, we conclude (that using larger models) may foster the obesity epidemic.”
In a weird way, I understand where their logic came from. Yes, Obesity is a problem in the U.S. and if plus-size becomes the normal standard of beauty, anything over becomes more “ok” or attractive to society and people are less likely to try and control their weight. The study says things like, “Health is on average reduced since people depart even further from their healthy weight.” There are so many more things to take into consideration though. For one thing, they make the assumption that plus-size models are overweight and that’s not always the case. They also make the assumption that thin models help people control their weight by providing incentive, but don’t note that they may also lead to eating disorders. The founder of Hope.com says, “I would say the skinnier models provide a worse body image and unrealistic standard. Younger girls are especially subjectable to being influenced by underweight models.”
If we’re going to go in their logic direction, it could also be argued that thin models lead to obesity because the models are so far from attainable that society just “gives up” instead of using them as a weight control incentives. Both are extreme and unlikely argument results. Dr. Gregg Jantz, an eating disorder specialist says, “We need a mix of models, none of whom have extreme weights, either thin or fat, but who look great at a “normal” weight.” Sounds about right.
In my opinion, if we don’t at least try and change the standard of beauty, whether normal or plus-size, then the way women view themselves will never change. It leads to a trickle down effect of women being unhappy with themselves, which leads to a lack of life confidence, which can and does hold women back professionally and emotionally. Why would we want to keep doing that?
Either way, any researcher or statistics course taker will tell you that one study does not a fact make.

Plus size models may not be better role models

Plus size models may promote obesity

Dr Davide Dragone and Dr Luca Savorelli, researchers from the University of Bologna, Italy, have come up with a new research stating that larger models will not promote healthy eating habits and escalate the global problem of obesity.

Their research paper is titled 'Thinness and Obesity: A Model of Food Consumption, Health Concerns, and Social Pressure' and was presented at the Royal Economic Society's annual conference in London. It was the first study to argue that using plus size fashion models will change people's perception of ideal weight or spur people to maintain healthy weight.

They wrote in the paper: 'If being overweight is the average condition and the ideal body weight is thin, increasing the ideal body weight may increase welfare by reducing social pressure. By contrast, health is on average reduced, since people depart even further from their healthy weight. Given that in the US and in Europe people are on average overweight, we conclude that these policies, even when are welfare improving, may foster the obesity epidemic.'

Not using skinny models can help young girls with eating disorders but would be unwise if you consider the nation as a whole. Thinner models motivate ordinary women to recognise their own weight problems and lose weight.

This study might conflict with the recent efforts to ban sub size zero models from the ramp. More and more designers are not using skinny models, including Victoria Beckham, after a reported 80% rise in the number of young girls suffering from anorexia admitted to hospital in England in the last ten years.

An agreement between Italy, Spain and Germany and the fashion industry was made in 2006 which made a rule to increase the minimum size for models. Even high-street fashion labels have upped the production of larger sizes.

Dr Dragone and Dr Savorelli beg to differ: 'To promote chubby fashion models when obesity is one of the major problems of industrialised countries seems to be a paradox. Everyone has to trade off in life a number of things like the pleasure of eating and going to the gym or something as a cost. So if you just fix the average healthy weight then maybe you will throw up some incentives to be thin.'

Another recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research 'Seeing is Eating' might agree with the researchers from Italy as they too claim what we see impacts our diet.

Authors Margaret Campbell and Gina Mohr explain: 'Seeing someone overweight leads to a temporary decrease in a person's own felt commitment to his or her health goal.'

In one of their studies, participants shown images of overweight people ate twice as many cookies than they would normally and didn't worry about their weight goals.

They further added: 'Thinking about personal health goals and reminding oneself of the undesirable effects of eating indulgent food at the time of possible consumption can help people avoid eating too much.'

Dr Dragone and Dr Savorelli, you must have looked at some leading plus size models like Crystal Renn, Kasia Pilewicz and Robyn Lawley before wasting your time on this study. These women are not only plus size women but also extra-ordinary role models, who maintain their health and a flourishing modelling career without promoting unhealthy diets and eating habits.

Media Diet Survival and Why Diets Don’t Work

It’s already that time of year when I begin to think of the beach. Will I suit up or will I be relegated to Morticia Adams status avoiding the sun as if it was an allergy? The dreaded diet dilemma creeps into my psyche as I envision the warm season deprived of pistachio ice cream. I begin to reflect on a friend’s commentary on his drinking. “I’ve never craved a cocktail as much as when I saw Ray Milland in The Lost Weekend. That movie made me want to drink even more. I literally ran out of that movie theater in a desperate search for a bar”, he said.
Our current TV fare consists of shows (except for the brilliant CBS comedy, Mike and Molly) that represent the plus size as shame-filled weak sisters. On OWN’s (Oprah Winfrey Network’s) Addicted to Food we witness patients performing an exercise where they look at their reflection wearing nothing but a paper bag with cut out eyeholes and their birthday suits. They tear up when confronted with the reality of their bodies. And, the recent season of big brother watching has arrived in the form of the diet police on The Biggest Loser where we observe an Olympian’s fall from grace as he disappoints the melodramatic Jillian Michaels with a cheat captured on video.

Shame and guilt has never been a motivator for us! But why does the media embrace only repentant overweight people? Aren’t we the ones watching Top Chef and Food Network shows? You can’t stay abstinent from food so we’ll always have to deal with temptation. Since food triggers are ubiquitous, why can’t we advocate eating smaller portions of everything instead of denying our love of food? Why must we beat ourselves up because we can’t reach the perfect single digit size or because we ate too much bread? Doesn’t all this obsessiveness lead to failure because we can’t meet impossibly high standards?

The only thing that’s ever worked for me is a lifestyle change. I’ve been to a residential diet program. The only plan that works is a realistic one. It means setting an attainable, maintainable weight goal and a doable exercise routine. Dieters tend to see extremes-all or nothing and these programs, excluding the very reasonable Weight Watchers will turn us all into crazed characters from Reefer Madness.

Light and Airy—Rodney Cutler went for an airy updo at the Tadashi Shoji spring '11 show: Start by applying a texturizing spray to dry hair. Create a side-part, then pull hair back into two ponytails, one on top of the other (leaving the top section out). Apply a pomade to the top section, and curl hair starting at the roots in diagonal sections with a 1" curling iron. Brush out the top section to create waves. Twist the two ponytails together into a loose bun at the back and secure with bobby-pins.

Aussie Model Covers ELLE France Plus-Size Issue April 8, 2011

Australian model Robyn Lawley definitely doesn’t have any qualms about being referred to as a plus-sized model. In fact, she’s taken to the opportunity with both hands; moving from Sydney to New York, nabbing herself several contracts, editorial features and runway shows along the way – and now appears on the latest cover of ELLE France.
Chosen by ELLE France for their Ronde et Fashion ‘curvy edition,’ Lawley features in a 10-page spread titled ‘Fashion voluptueuse.’ Shot by Lee Broomfield, she models clothing by Lanvin, Sonia Rykiel, Jil Sander, Emilio Pucci, Hermes, Balenciaga and Dries Van Noten.
Lawley, who began modelling as early as 14 for Dolly magazine, found a niche in plus-sized modelling after being recognised by Chelsea Bonner, director of Bella model management. By 2009 she became the youngest and highest-paid plus model to be signed to a fashion label in Australia (thanks to a contract with Autograph clothing). She has since signed with WCurve (UK model management) and even scored herself a three-year contract with New York agency Wilhelmina’s, before she’d even met with the agency.
The 21-year-old now reigns as probably one of the most recognised and sought after plus-size models, and her down-to-earth attitude has made her an advocate for redefining beauty and body image.
When it's all said and done, an Australian model is on the cover of ELLE France - a remarkable feat for a model of any size - so major kudos to Robyn.

Kim Kardashian did Cosmopolitan UK this month, where she revealed her bikini body (again) and shared a lot of info on body size, body image, being curvy and having ‘flaws’:

It’s crazy anyone should assume that just because you’re in the spotlight, you’re flawless. Sometimes I pig out and I still feel great, and think, “That was so worth it!” That’s how I feel a lot of the time. I think, “See this little dimple of cellulite here? It was so worth it for that cookies ’n’ cream ice cream!”’
‘If I was stuck on a diet my whole life, I would be really miserable. I love to eat. If you can’t enjoy your life then what’s the point? You can’t torture yourself. I love Rice Krispies Treats, ice cream and frozen yogurt. I never aspired to be a size zero. Although one time I tried on a dress with a size-8 label when I thought I was a size 4. It turned out it was a UK size 8, so actually it was my normal size. But it made me think, “Why do I even care?” I couldn’t care less if it said 14. It’s just a number. Your best measure is to look in the mirror. I always say you shouldn’t weigh yourself. I don’t even have a set of scales in my house.’
‘I see ridiculous stories about my butt, like how it has been insured. I feel like saying, “Hey, everyone has a butt. It’s not that big a deal!” But I suppose it’s flattering. Personally, I’ve always loved the curvy look. Even when I was a little girl and all my friends would be like, “Oh, my god, your butt’s so big”. And I’d say, “I love it”.’
‘Khloé is super-tall, with great legs; Kourtney is tiny with a great stomach. We embrace the fact that no one is really alike. Our parents always made us feel like, “This is who we are, we’re all beautiful and this is exactly how we’re supposed to be”. We never had any pressure to look different and I think that’s why we’re so confident about it today. Kourtney would always make fun of me for having bigger boobs than she did. When you’re young, it’s embarrassing. Your body is changing and it’s scary. Then when I was 15, I realised it was great. I’ve never wished for smaller boobs since.’

‘If I had to go back to catwalk presentations I would be in a panic… Already the models I find are too skinny, too sad. I knew the age of the super top models, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, who were always lively and smiling. Today you go between several défilés and you will see the exact same type of girl – it just doesn’t inspire me.’

One of the most common mistakes we make when we apply moisturizer is forgetting the most parched parts such as elbows and knees. This may cause these areas look more rough and unattractive due to lack of moisture. No use to take care of the rest of your skin and these parts look scaly, cracked and parched.
Apply creams that you use for the body on the elbows and knees. If these are a reddish appearance, try to use more greasy lotions. If you spend some time and still look the same you should consult a dermatologist.

Wearing Leggings: The Do’s and Dont’s

Ladies Ladies Ladies. Normally I am the bearer of good news and even greater fashion tips, but there is an epidemic that’s sweeping the streets around the world; and my beautiful plus size divas seem to be affected by a trend that started off for some as a fashion DO, and is rapidly becoming a fashion DON’T! Leggings, have become to many a nightmare in disguise, and I’m here to wake you up, and help you look great.

When choosing the right Legging there are some easy steps that need to be taken in order to look like the diva that you are.

1. Always plan to have a long enough shirt to cover up those Bootylicious curves (yes we embrace our curves, but leave a little for the imagination).

2. Try it ON! I know that life is hectic, and we always don’t feel like trying items on. With Leggings its best to see the fit at the store because some brands run larger or smaller than others.

3.Tights, or any type of see through Hosiery, are NOT and I repeat, NOT made to just wear with a shirt. That is a NO NO! (What not to wear). If you can see skin, that’s not a good look, and a greater fashion mistake.

4. Make sure the fabric works well with your body type. Not all fabrics accentuate the plus size figure well (satin silk, leather etc). If we are seeing too many dips, wrinkles and too much jiggle, that fabric may not be good for you.

5. Lastly remember that Leggings are an accessory, it’s not the main piece, it shouldn’t draw more attention than the rest of the outfit.

Ladies these steps will guarantee success in the Legging department. Some things come by trial and error and wearing Leggings the wrong way is an error that I want you to avoid. Always remember ” Wear the outfit, don’t let the outfit wear you.”

Finding & Shopping For Your Plus Size Wedding Gown

Picture this:

You’re sweeping up the isle in a fabulous wedding dress that will turn heads, make your friends jealous, and get that “Wow!” grin and smile from the man of your dreams.

We’ve all experienced the irritation of finding an outfit we like and then not finding it in our size can be disappointing. When it comes to finding your ideal wedding gown the frustration of a dress that doesn’t fit can be ten times worse. With all the stress of planning a wedding and being a lovely plus-size bride, the sample dress not fitting, especially the one you love, can turn your joy into sadness, which can be avoided by making a couple of calls.

If you have a Wedding Planner/Coordinator who has worked with plus size brides, she can assist you with all these steps as well.

Today I am going to help you as I would do with my clients (plus size or straight size) when preparing to locate and find the dress of your dreams!

Find your ideal dress (es) – make a list of the dresses you like by searching online or thumbing through the bridal magazines. Be sure to note the a) dress maker/designer, b) style number, c) store or boutique where the dress can be purchased from. If your wedding is more than 5 months away you have plenty of time so no need to rush or get frustrated.
Make the call – once you have your list together see if you can sort and group your dresses by the boutique or store they can be found at. Now contact the store or boutique and check that they have the style AND size you need. Make a note of the Consultant’s name. *A Quick Note*: Now if you are a shy girl and prefer a bit more privacy, try to set an appointment during the week instead of the ever-popular weekend when many brides (and grooms) will be at the stores also.
Take a GOOD Friend Along – Take friends along whose objective is to make sure that you look stunning and the dress flatters (not hides) your best assets. Ask them to bring a camera as well (as long as it is permitted by the boutique) so that you can review your selections later in case you don’t decide on a dress at that moment or you have other shops to visit.
Be realistic and have a sense of humor – this is an exciting time in your life but don’t take yourself too seriously. You will find the right dress!

Five Rules for Investing In Your Friendships

Tax season is upon us and while we’re all trying to maximize our finances, pay off our holiday debts and figure out how to ask for our next raise– we would be remiss if we didn’t apply some of the same intention toward our friendships.

1. Diversify to Control Risk. No matter how good the stock is, you never want it all in one place. You may have a BFF, but life changes and shifts the dynamics between even the best of friends. Make sure you have other friendships fostered before you need them.

2. Buy in Thoughtfully. Friendship takes a lot of energy & time to build the familiarity required to foster acceptance, safety and intimacy. The most mature thing to do is to only give a little, make sure you see the value returned, before giving a little more, etc. Do your homework in connecting with different people and intentionally channeling time to those where you can see your deposits are being appreciated and held carefully.

3. Expect Corrections Instead of Fearing Them. The market has upswings and downswings– we should prepare for both, not act shocked when the market corrects itself. It always does. True in friendships too. Even the closest of friends have misunderstandings, jealousy and judgements. It doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t good friends, rather it just means we’re all imperfect and should come to expect that and not be shocked by it.

4. Don’t Give Up on Value. Too often people give up on companies or stock based on how they are performing now, instead of looking at their long-term value. Similarly, don’t drop or add friends based only on current performance. Companies with clean balance sheets, the ability to make acquisitions, good leadership and upcoming new products are way more of an asset in the long term than simply based on current market value.

5. Remember where your Pay-Off Comes From. In stocks it is in the selling that you make your millions. In friendship, it is in the enjoying. Be sure to spend the time and energy laughing and being together that will make all the withdrawals and deposits worth it!

Who doesn't love a good comeback? Though it's usually the stuff of last-minute hair fixes, the ponytail is officially back on the spring hairstyle roster and making a bid for MVP status. But what exactly is it about the the pony that champions other 'dos? Besides it being simply the easiest and fastest way to way to pull your hair back (and ideal for beating the heat), ponytail hairstyles are seriously versatile—a fact proven most recently at the the fall shows: From the ultra-sleek to messy-chic, the pony ruled the runways. And while the style may seem more routine than renegade, just a few simple switch ups and your ponytail gets a marked makeover. So what's the key to keeping it all in place? The right ponytail holder, says Matt Fugate of Sally Hershberger Downtown. "It's all in the band—I recommend Blax Hair Elastics. Droopy ponytails are usually caused by worn out elastics, so make sure you use one that's good quality and snag-free." Here's to ponying up this spring!

Soft and Low—The low ponytail looks best when it's a little loose and romantic. Starting with a volumizing gel or texturizing spray, blow dry the hair straight and create a center part. Keep volume at the crown for a little bit of a '60s vibe, and pull the hair back into a low ponytail at the nape. Wrap a piece of hair around the elastic and secure underneath with a bobby pin. If you're starting with dry hair, tap some volumizing powder or spray dry shampoo into the roots at the crown, then pull hair back into a low pony.

Jordin Sparks Lost 30 Pounds – Then & Now

“I love food and I love my curves. I’m very strong-willed and I’m stubborn in that sense to where I’m just like, ‘No, I won’t be that way.”

… the 21 year-old singer joined the ‘weight loss’ club recently and shed 30 pounds.

How did she do it? By working out with a personal trainer:

“Any time I find time — or I’m not sleeping — he’s like, ‘Let’s work out, let’s do something.’ I’m like, ‘no,’ but he gets my butt up and I’ve got to do it,” Jordin says. “It’s fun to do that. He doesn’t keep the same thing every time,” Jordin says. “He shocks the body so you’re running, you’re doing throwdowns, you’re doing stairs, you’re doing lunges.”

Militza down 121 Lb in almost 2 years with great effort and sacrifice and not limit her self to stay there. On March 14, 2011 made one of his dreams was to open a gym to work with obesity and guide people to lead healthy lives.

For my pride she is one of my best friends and I'm living this experience with her. Militza is an example that if you offer something in life you do not look back. The weight is not what makes a person if inside you and your self-esteem, she lost weight through diet and exercise and not merely to eat. Ate all but she knew that I had to put a little more effort when exercising.
